Visiting Hours
During your recovery, you need time to rest and we want to protect your safety by reducing the risk of infection from outside sources. Our healthcare professionals need time and space to provide you with quality care. We recognize that family members, friends and loved ones also play an important part of a patient’s care experience, and we encourage the involvement of family and loved ones during your stay. We are partners in care with you and your family.

We do not view family as visitors. Bluewater Health supports family access outside of regular visiting hours, and patients identify the family members who are welcome to visit at any time you feel ready to see them.

Please note that after-hours visiting is limited to a maximum of two visitors per patient and in some cases, we may need to restrict visiting to protect the privacy and rights of other patients who are sharing a room. To support the care and comfort of all of our patients in semi-private and ward rooms, we may need to reduce the activity and noise level. Also, in some cases, we may need to interrupt a visit if patient care is required or if patient/staff safety is at risk.

Between 8:30 pm and 6:00 am, family members are encouraged to enter the Sarnia hospital through the front door, where there is an intercom with direct access to Security staff who can open the doors. In Petrolia, the entrance is through the Emergency Department, and nursing staff will respond to the intercom.

Visitors are friends or neighbours. Visiting hours for friends and neighbours are important, so that we can support your healing process.

Often, visitors come bearing special treats for our patients to eat. As many of our patients experience feeding and/or swallowing difficulties, food brought in by visitors must be brought to the attention of a nurse on the patient floor.

Bluewater Health is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment. Family and visitors are reminded to wash your hands before, during and after visiting, and those who feel unwell, have an infection or flu-like symptoms, are asked not to visit until feeling well again.

We ask that patients, visitors, staff, physicians, volunteers and students refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes and other scented personal care products while at the hospital.

We are also a smoke-free hospital. Smoking is not allowed in any part of the building or on hospital property.

General Visiting Hours are from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm daily. There are special visiting hours in Labour and Delivery, Palliative Care, Mental Health and the ICU. Please confirm times with your care provider.

Friends and family are asked to please limit their telephone calls before 11:00 am to allow nursing staff and physicians to care for their loved one.
Pet Visitation
We recognize the healing benefits of pet visitation. We have a policy to guide such visits in non-acute areas of the hospitals. For the safety, health and comfort of all patients, our policy includes requirements for advance notice and scheduling, proof of proper immunizations and pet hygiene considerations. Please discuss these requirements with your care provider who will assist you with the proper process.
